The boss of Truro City Football Club has told Cornwall Live he is “considering” purchasing Truro nightclub Vanilla, which shut suddenly this week.

Truro City chairman Peter Masters – who owns the Sunday Independent newspaper and Cornwall Today magazine – said: “It’s definitely something we’re looking at.”

Clubbers in the city were shocked at the sudden closure of the 300-capacity venue, which has been owned by Graeme Scrimgeour for the past ten years.

It is the latest nightspot to close in Cornwall in recent times following the likes of Zone in Redruth and L2 in Truro.

Reactions on social media ranged from “OMG, I loved a Friday night in there” to “Another good place bites the dust. That means there is nowhere good enough in Truro anymore and hasn't been for some time. RIP Truro night life!”

However, there appears to be hope that the ever-popular club on Duke Street – which regularly sees queues outside the building at the weekend – will reopen under new ownership.

We approached Mr Masters, owner and chairman of Truro City FC, after hearing rumours he was in talks with the club’s landlord.

He said: “When somewhere like this closes you see a lot of interested people rushing in. We have to stand back and have a look if the deal’s right, then we could do it."

“It will be a shame if it’s closed for good. The Truro scene is not at its best and it relies on places like Vanilla to keep it going, especially with the Hall For Cornwall being closed.”
