Dog walkers are being urged to be vigilant after palm oil was found washed ashore on a Cornish beach.

After a long time in the cold sea, the oil becomes solid and can attract the attention of dogs or wildlife. It is a recurring problem on beaches.

Palm oil is a natural and edible vegetable oil, which is commonly used in food processing and as a raw ingredient. However, it presents a problem as it can easily become contaminated with fuel waste, bacteria and other toxins.

Newquay coastguards published a picture of the object and said: “A member of the public has informed us of a substance that appears to be palm oil on Mawgan Porth beach this morning. Please be aware especially if you’re out and about dog walking.”

If anyone finds deposits of palm oil they can contact Cornwall Council who will come and remove it from council owned beaches. You can report sightings of the deposits on 0300 1234 141.
