Businesses owners in New Bridge Street have been left mopping up the mess after the downpour at 3pm.

Police were called to control traffic as the water overflowed pavements close to the junction with St Austell Street.

There are reports that the water has encroached into some buildings.

A staff member at Shanghai Lounge on New Bridge Street said: “Fortunately it hasn’t affected us. The flooding is a few doors further along. We weren’t open at the time so didn’t see the heavy rain. It happened at about 3pm. There are still a few people cleaning up down there. I think some of them have had it quite bad. It’s not something that happens very often to be honest.”
