Almost a year to the day since crowdfunding to open a bar, a Cornish brewery has seen its dream venue open its doors ... and people are already loving it.

Verdant Brewing Co has gone from strength to strength since starting up in 2014. Its juicy, hoppy American-style beers are now sold nationally in their distinctive coolly designed cans and it has opened a tap room in London, The Experiment.

Now comes its pet project, The Seafood Bar, which opened in Falmouth on Tuesday (February 12).

Based on Quay Hill, mere feet from the water, it made perfect sense for Verdant brains Adam Robertson, James Heffron and Richard White to come up with a seafood tapas concept alongside eight taps of their fruity beers.

Its intimate, friendly, very Falmouth in design (meaning it will appeal to everyone from bearded students to bearded granddads) and welcomes dogs as well as children.

Cornwall Live visited on its second day of opening and can report that the food is sublime for somewhere that had only been open for just over 24 hours.

Chef Andy Lowe - who has previously worked at celebrated Cornish restaurants The Cove and the New Yard - is coming up with delicious small plates with the help of consultant chef James Riley.

Fish is from Newlyn, shellfish is from across the water in Flushing and the beer is from just up the road, so everything is as fresh as is possible. The dishes are priced from £4.50 to £7.50 and are ideal for sharing or, if you fancy a main-type portion, go for the fish finger butty and chips, which, combined, is a tenner.

Gurnard, mussels, cavolo nero and crab sauce

Highlights include marinated brill, melon, pickled carrot and lime dressing, Verdant's own take on a vibrant ceviche. All bright, sparkling flavours and the taste of Latin America. It would certainly go well with one of the brewery's Lightbulb beers.

There's The Seafood Bar's own take on a crab sandwich - white and brown crab meat on a sourdough base with cucumber and chives - while the gurnard and mussels with cavolo nero in a bisque-style crab sauce is stunning and well worth the £6.50 price tag.

With other exceptional tapas such as native scallops with a beautiful sweet parsnip puree and the bar's own pickled cauliflower, they're definitely on to a winner with punchy dishes complementing Verdant's range of beers on tap (the plan is four core and four seasonal).

I'm not the world's biggest beer fan but there's something hugely addictive about their tangy, hazy beers, which have a whole range of fruity flavours.

They're deceptively light. Yes, Quiet Charge may be a 4.5% pale ale but Putty is an 8% Double IPA, though you wouldn't tell from its easy drinkability. Beware though as the sea's just at the end of the road.

That's one of the reasons you won't get served a pint here. Beers come in third, half and two-third pint glasses. The main idea is that they want you to taste as many Verdant brews as possible - it's not all about getting bladdered, is it?

As Lydia Light - a welcoming presence behind the bar - says: "You can expect a cosy, friendly vibe. We're inclusive and exciting, as we want to encourage people to try new things."

When I visited, dining in a corner were Ben and Sammy Quinn. Ben is the chef and co-owner of celebrated Canteen Cornwall in St Agnes.

There's no higher praise than a fellow chef giving you the thumbs up. Ben said: "There's a really good energy about the place. Every single small dish you could tell they wanted to eat in the kitchen - they were loving what they were cooking."

The Verdant crew aren't resting on their laurels now the tapas bar has opened.

Their next plan is to raise £1m, via a Crowdcube campaign, to build a bigger 17,500 sq ft destination brewery in Falmouth, which would allow them to produce 2.6m pints a year. The building would also include a taproom.

The Seafood Bar is open from noon until midnight on Tuesday to Saturday. They don't take bookings, just chance your drinking arm and pop in.
