Channel 4’s controversial documentary Leaving Neverland is set to air at the beginning of March, despite the channel receiving a tirade of backlash from Michael Jackson’s friends and family.

The two-part documentary, which was first shown at the Sundance Film Festival last month, features interviews with two men – Wade Robson and James Safechuck – who allege they were abused by Michael as children.

The 'Thriller' star was accused of child molestation in 2005, but was acquitted. He continued to protest his innocence until he died in 2009.

Representatives for Michael’s estate issued a statement to Variety condemning the four-hour documentary, which read: “Leaving Neverland isn’t a documentary, it is the kind of tabloid character assassination Michael Jackson endured in life, and now in death.

“The film takes uncorroborated allegations that supposedly happened 20 years ago and treats them as fact.”

The documentary’s director Dan Reed has said about Leaving Neverland: “If there’s anything we’ve learned during this time in our history, it’s that sexual abuse is complicated, and survivors’ voices need to be listened to. It took great courage for these two men to tell their stories and I have no question about their validity.

“I believe anyone who watches this film will see and feel the emotional toll on the men and their families and will appreciate the strength it takes to confront long-held secrets.”

Leaving Neverland airs on Channel 4 on Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th March at 9pm.
