A footbridge over the Medina has been proposed as part of a Newport Harbour Masterplan announced by Isle of Wight Council.

The proposed lifting bridge would be for pedestrians and cyclists, and would be in addition to any possible future vehicle bridge, which is not included in this plan.

It would link Seaclose Park with destinations such as the Isle of Wight College, St Mary’s Hospital, and shops and businesses at Dodnor.

The plan for the town aims to increase connectivity to the existing town centre and attract visitors, and has been put forward after two years of consultation.

It also plans to protect the future of the harbour by providing maintenance an investment in harbour facilities.

Cllr Wayne Whittle, cabinet member for regeneration and business development, said: "Our historic county town drives the economy of the Island, and the Newport Harbour masterplan gives us a chance to see some serious investment in the future of the town.

"I’m confident these plans will be the blueprint for some exciting and innovative improvements to the whole of Newport – and I’m looking forward to seeing the new businesses and visitors arriving."

Other options under consideration include restaurants, housing, commercial space, new car parking, higher education resources, a rebuild of the existing Riverside Centre, a new hotel and a cultural venue.

Most of the new proposals are on the eastern side of the estuary, leaving commercial functions such as existing marine and boating activity on the west.

Where possible, the plan aims to keep and reuse buildings to help conserve and enhance the historic and marine heritage of Newport Quay.

The plans have been drawn up in the light of suggestions from harbour users, residents and businesses.

IW Council said the proposals could be adopted as planning policy, which would then be the framework for development over the next 20-25 years with the first projects on the ground in the next two or three years.

An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said they will go to the market to seek a partner – or multiple partners – to deliver the plans after the consultation period has closed at the end of September.

An exhibition outlining the proposals will be based at 30 High Street, Newport, throughout the summer, with opportunities to talk to the masterplanning team:

  • Monday 15th July 11am to 5.30pm
  • Tuesday 16th July 2pm-8pm
  • Wednesday 17th July 11am to 5pm

The exhibition continues Tuesday to Friday 10am - 4pm, from July 18 until August 30, 2019. It will also tour various locations across the Island, with details to be announced on social media.
