Conservative MP for Montgomeryshire Glyn Davies has backed Theresa May with his "total support", despite pressure building on the Prime Minister after the Government's Brexit deal was published this week.

And Mr Davies accused those seeking a no-confidence vote as "self-indulgent, self-defeating, and not acting in the national interest."

The Government's proposals for leaving Europe were criticised by Euro-sceptic members of the Conservative party last week, with several writing letters to the party's '1922 committee', which can call a no-confidence vote should 48 letters be submitted. A total of 25 letters are believed to have been received so far.

However, Glyn Davies MP said the Government's draft Brexit agreement was "better than he expected", and had no intention of joining calls for Mrs May to resign.

"I accept that there is divided opinion in both the Government, main opposition and Liberal Democrat parties on the future shape of the UK’s relationship with the EU. I’ve never known such an uncertain time in public affairs in my lifetime. Whether we voted Leave or Remain, it’s crucial that we stay calm and consider next steps with extreme care," he said.

"To be suggesting that the Conservative Party should seek to change our Prime Minister at this time is unwise, verging on the irresponsible.

"I accept that the opposition will challenge the Government, but in recent weeks, there has been constant sniping against our Prime Minister by a handful of Conservative MPs, seriously undermining her efforts to secure a leaving deal that works for both the UK and the EU. They have been self-indulgent, self-defeating and not acting in the interests of our country. Thankfully, they have been shown to be a ‘Busted flush’ with nothing like the influence they thought they had.

"Like most people I am not 100% happy with the draft agreement at this stage, but I do believe it is better than I expected, and it is in the interests of Montgomeryshire, the UK and the EU that we leave with an agreement. The Prime Minister knows she has my full support. We are fortunate that we have such a dedicated and resolute leader at this crucial time."

Earlier this week Brecon and Radnor MP Chris Davies told the County Times he would wait until he had analysed the draft Brexit agreement before taking any action.

"Until I have read through the document in detail and looked at what genuine alternatives we have I will not be rushed into a decision," he said.
