The leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats says she intends to stand as MP for Brecon and Radnorshire at the next general election.

Jane Dodds announced her campaign to become a Parliamentary Candidate for Wales and England’s largest constituency area on Monday, February 11.

She said on Twitter: “Proud to announce I’m standing to be your candidate for Brecon & Radnorshire at the next General Election. Together we can return a strong Welsh Liberal Democrat voice to the corridors of Westminster.”

The former social worker, who lives in Welshpool, replaced former Ceredigion MP Mark Williams as leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats in 2017.

She has previously contested the Westminster seat for Montgomeryshire in 2015 and 2017, and the Welsh Assembly seat in 2016.

In a letter posted on social media, the fluent Welsh speaker, from Wrexham, said: “This constituency is an iconic Liberal seat, a place committed to the liberal values of openness, tolerance and internationalism.

“I have extensive experience campaigning across a rural constituency. I have led numerous campaigns on local issues and, through my time as a councillor, I know how to deliver real change.”

She added: “I am passionate about social justice, want Wales to become a world leader in green energy and want to see us doing so much more to help refugees
