Hundreds of people have signed a petition opposing the closure of Llandrindod Wells' driving test centre.

Earlier this week the County Times revealed that the test centre was to shut its doors.

Now a petition has been set up on the Change.org website opposing the closure, which has already garnered 947 signatures.

An accompanying statement says it has been set up by the Mid Wales Driving Instructor Association.

The statement reads: "We as a community can not allow this to happen. Closing Llandrindod Wells driving test centre will have a massive effect on the local community.

"Having to travel to Brecon or Newtown test centre, will mean longer driving lessons for students and instructors, which isn't beneficial for many families or their instructors.

"Seven driving instructors, driving to Brecon or Newtown five days a week, several times a day will have a massive impact on the environment where as one examiner coming once a day and spending all day in Llandrindod Wells would have less impact, and makes more sense. It would also mean more traffic on the already busy roads leading to and from Brecon and Newtown.

"Driving test waiting times in Brecon and Newtown would increase to accommodate the extra driving tests needed at these test centres. With the pandemic we are experiencing at the moment there are already going to be delays in test times, do we really need to have to wait longer because of a test centre closure ?"

No formal closure date has yet been announced, although the petition suggests it could shut for the last time on June 30.

Announcing the closure, a DVSA spokesperson said: “DVSA’s priority is to help everyone through a lifetime of safe driving.

“We have been informed by the landlord of the Llandrindod Wells Driving Test Centre site that our agreement will not be renewed."
