THE Brecknock and Radnorshire Sports Awards has become the latest victim of Powys County Council's sport funding cull.

The annual showpiece and celebration of sport in the region follows in the footsteps of the Montgomeryshire Sports Awards which cited an end of Powys County Council support as reason it was scrapped this year.

Richard Jones of the Brecknock and Radnor Sports Partnership (BRSP) said: "As you can imagine this decision was extremely difficult.

"However with the recent termination of our grant funding from Powys County Council the BRSP have been forced to look at alternative delivery formats and financing.

"The BRSP is currently in communication with Powys County Council and awaiting a response from the Portfolio Holder regarding alternative funding options.

"This year our focus is to continue to support our talented athletes from Brecknock and Radnor."

Jones confessed any revival of the ceremony was now dependent on sponsorship "more than ever before."
