BERRIEW and Llanrhaeadr head into the weekend aiming to complete history.

At the time the County Times went to press the sides met in the final of the MP Foulkes Montgomeryshire Cup in Welshpool before renewing rivalries in the final of the Central Wales Cup in Caersws on Saturday.

Berriew manager Dave Jones urged his players to seize the day with the club having never won either trophy before.

“Our aim at the start of the season was to finish in the top six and win a cup,” said Jones.

“We comfortably achieved our aim in the league and exceeded expectations while now we have two opportunities with the finals to achieve our second aim of the season.”

Jones accepted his young side would go into both finals as underdogs.

“Llanrhaeadr are always tough opposition but I have confidence in the lads and know that if we play at our best then we will have a chance to produce an upset,” said Jones.

Berriew will be without midfielder Bailee Austin and goalkeeper Archie Jones who are both cup tied while goalkeeper Ryan Edkins is missing with a long term injury.

Meanwhile Llanrhaeadr bid to end a successful season with silverware with manager Marc Griffiths targeting a cup double having already masterminded the club’s Huws Gray Alliance survival, earning plaudits throughout the Welsh football community.

The club’s reserve side has also secured the JT Hughes Montgomeryshire League Mitsubishi Division Two title to continue the feel good factor sweeping through the club.

“The finals give the lads the opportunity to make a special history for the club,” said Griffiths. “It’s been a good season for us but we are all in football to win trophies and we have given ourselves the opportunity to do that.”

Griffiths insisted his side would not be underestimating the challenge of the Rhiewsiders.

Griffiths said: “We have met frequently over the last few seasons and are well aware of the threat they pose. They have some talented young players and will be full of energy so we will have to be at the races over the two games.”

Llanrhaeadr will be without defensive duo Glenn Evans and Tom Bailey along with striker Iwan Matthews on Saturday.
