Berriew 2 Llanrhaeadr 3

KHYAM Wytton’s late winner began the party as Llanrhaeadr toasted MP Foulkes Montgomeryshire Cup success for the first time in their history with glory over Berriew in Welshpool on Wednesday.

In an entertaining game the MMP-NL Mid Wales League One side threatened early on with Joe Haycock denied by a goalline clearance and Charlie Humphreys going close.

However Llanrhaeadr led on 17 minutes with Iwan Matthews firing home from the edge of the area.

Berriew hit back on 33 minutes with a beautiful throughball from Haycock releasing Richard Davies to slot past goalkeeper Jimmy Hayns.

The second-half proved a frenetic affair with the tone set as early as the 51st minute when a goalmouth scramble culminated in an own goal as Berriew celebrated the lead only for Llanrhaeadr to respond within seconds as Dan Weaver struck.

Both sides played their part in an entertaining half with chances created at both ends with Haycock and Davies going close for Berriew while Matthews and Marc Griffiths stretched the Berriew rearguard.

With the match seemingly destined for extra-time it was left for Matt Evans to cross for Wytton to rise above Tom Williams and steer a looping header over Berriew goalkeeper Harry Wilkinson.

Llanrhaeadr player-manager Marc Griffiths praised his side and complimented Berriew who avenged defeat by clinching the Central Wales Cup with victory over his side in Saturday’s final at Caersws.

Griffiths said: “Both cup finals were really good games and great advert for Mid Wales football.

“Berriew are a good young side and looking back over the two games they deserve to come away with a trophy.

“As for us that’s our season over now and we’ll be glad of the rest before planning for next season and bringing Championship football to Llanrhaeadr.”
