A fierce fire in a duplex Wednesday night displaced eight people and sent one resident and two firefighters to the hospital for evaluation.

The resident and firefighters were treated and released, Fire Chief John Oates said. The duplex at 9-11 Leichtner Drive was heavily damaged and may be a tear-down, Oates said.

Firefighters responded at about 11 p.m. Six adults and two children had gotten out, Oates said. The fierce fire, which destroyed two parked cars and melted siding off houses on either side, was under control in about an hour, but the heat and humidity kept smoke near the ground and dousing the blaze was a tough job, the chief said.

“It’s a pretty ugly environment to work in,” Oates said.

The fire started in the kitchen of 9 Leichtner Drive and spread to the other half. The cause is under investigation, Oates said.
