An SUV slammed into a state trooper in a stopped police cruiser early Sunday in a crash that sent four people to the hospital, state police said.

They said it happened about 2:30 a.m. when Trooper Gregory Sawicki, 28, was in his police car parked behind a disabled vehicle in the median of I-95 north, about a quarter of a mile south of Exit 22. Sawicki had activated the emergency lights on his cruiser, state police said.

While Sawicki’s patrol car and the disabled 2015 Ford Mustang sat in the median, a third vehicle, a 2010 Chevy Tahoe, traveling in the left lane swerved into the left shoulder and struck Sawicki’s cruiser from behind. The impact pushed Sawicki’s police car into the Mustang in front of him, police said.

Sawicki and the driver of the Tahoe were extricated from their vehicles by the Fairfield Fire Department, police said.

He was taken to Bridgeport Hospital, and the other motorists were taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, they said. All injuries are described as minor in the report with the exception of Sawicki’s, which are referred to as serious. He suffered broken bones, Trooper Tanya Compagnone said.

The driver of the disabled Ford Mustang was Carmen E. Cisneros, 25, of Woodbridge, Va. and her passenger was Jose Martin Guerrero, 22, of the Bronx, state police said. The driver and sole occupant of the SUV was Joseph Buzzanca, 32, of Trumbull.

State police are investigating the incident and asking any witnesses to contact state police Troop G Bridgeport at 203-696-2500.
