West Hartford Public School leaders have “investigated” and “handled” an act of anti-Semitism at Hall High School Tuesday, according to a letter from principal Dan Zittoun distributed to parents Wednesday afternoon.

Zittoun told the Courant that “no one was physically hurt” and said he could not share specific information about the incident that happened inside the school “because it involves individual disciplinary matters involving a student.”

Zittoun said two students came to his office and reported the incident Tuesday afternoon.

“The acts were brought to our attention, investigated and handled in accordance with the student code of conduct,” Zittoun said. “Acts against any marginalized groups will never be tolerated and we will continue to take measures to ensure that they are not repeated.”

He said student safety and a safe learning environment remain a top priority for school leaders.

“We take pride in the diversity of our school and community,” Zittoun said. “As a collective group, our student body embraces this diversity and demonstrates a high level of respect. However, even in our community, we have isolated incidents that do not reflect our overall beliefs and culture and are not representative of the Hall community.”

Zittoun said in the letter sent home to parents that he has talked to some students about ways to ensure students feel safe at school. He said administrators have been in contact with various outside groups “to discuss our current educational programming and explore new ones.”

West Hartford Assistant Police Chief Robert McCue said police were notified of a “minor incident” at the high school, and that there wasn’t a threat or property damage, and nothing directed at a person. He said the department is not investigating the incident.
