One West Hartford man brought a hatchet to a fight outside a West Hartford apartment Monday afternoon, but 35-year-old Daniel Davis brought a gun, according to West Hartford police said.

Investigators believed Davis then shot the blade-wielding, 28-year-old man during their argument just after noon outside the West Beacon Street apartment near Prospect Avenue.

Davis was arrested after an hours-long search Monday afternoon and charged with five offenses, including first-degree assault and criminal possession of a pistol, Capt. Michael Perruccio said.

The victim was shot in the arm and transported to St. Francis Hospital with non life-threatening injuries for further treatment, Perruccio said.

The incident began when police received reports of a man brandishing an ax arguing with a man carrying a gun at about 12:10 p.m. on West Beacon, police said. While police were on their way, a second call to dispatch reported a single shot had been fired.

The first arriving officers found one man had been shot and were told the suspect ran away from the area, Perruccio said. They found a hatchet, instead of a full-sized ax, and a pistol at the scene, he added.

Officers from West Hartford and K-9 units from Hartford and Newington all responded to canvass the area to search for the suspect, later identified as Davis, who lives on West Beacon Street, Perruccio said.

Investigators located Davis at about 5:30 p.m. on Laurel Street in Hartford and took him into custody without incident, Perruccio said.

Davis was held Monday on $500,000 bond. Police continued to investigate and Perruccio said Monday night more charges could be forthcoming.
