Pancake Breakfast

WEST HARTFORD — The Greater Hartford Host Lions Club will host its 55th annual pancake and buffet breakfast at the American School for the Deaf, 139 North Main St., on Sunday, April 28, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children under the age of 12. The all-you-can-eat menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, hashed browns, fruit cups, muffins, coffee, tea, and juice.

Entertainment will include Anthony Cornicello on jazz piano and an appearance by mascot Paws the Lion. There will be a raffle at $2 per ticket.

May Day Family 5k Walk/Run

WEST HARTFORD — West Hartford Community Interactive will hold the May Day 5k family fun walk/run on Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The rain date is Sunday, May 5.

The course is a 1.1-mile loop that follows the Center Walking Route and is designed as a family friendly walk/run. Three times around is a full 5k.)

The first 50 people to register will receive a race T-shirt. One hundred people will receive a water bottle. 25th Anniversary Celebration Of CCIU

WEST HARTFORD — The Connecticut Council for Interreligious Understanding, Inc will celebrate the work CCIU has done for the past 25 years. The honored guest is Rev. Dr. Robert Sellers, who recently retired as board chair of the Parliament of World Religions. The 2018 Parliament, held in Toronto, drew more than 10,000 persons of faith and conscience from 80 nations and more than 200 unique spiritual backgrounds. Rev. Sellers will speak on “Responding to a World Where Hate and Violence are No Longer Surprising: How Interfaith Organizations Can Make the World a Better Place.”

A Night Of One-Act Plays

WEST HARTFORD — West Hartford Community Theater will kick off its second decade with ‘A Night of One-Act Plays,’ a night of fun and laughter for mature audiences, which will take place on Saturday, April 27, at 8 p.m. at Elmwood Community Center, 1106 New Britain Ave.

The following six one-act plays are being performed. The Facts of Life is a comedy about a bird and a bee on their wedding night, where they find that they might not be as compatible as they thought they would be. Directed by Laura Boates and written by Anna Maria Trusky. Cast includes Ryan Binder and Dayna Nevers.

Alexa, I Love You is about a marriage tested when the husband falls in love with someone (or, rather, someTHING) else. Written and directed by Piers Stonehart. Cast includes Tara Binder, Jen Ludgin, and Logan Lopez.

Bank Withdrawal Symptoms: Robbing a bank is hard enough, and it doesn’t get any easier when the lobby is filled with congenial customers who keep interrupting the job. Directed by Kayla Rodriguez and written by Jim Gustafson. Cast includes Logan Lopez, David Nichols, Laura Gargar, Barbara Gallow, Michael Dolan, Jen Ludgin, Kathryn Lewis, and Maggie Keane.

The Philadelphia is about a man in a restaurant who has fallen into a “Philadelphia,” a Twilight Zone-like state in which he cannot get anything he asks for. Directed by Michael Cartwright and written by David Ives. Cast includes Paul Kornman, Kent Morris, and Vickie Blake.

Miss Lovely is a sweet story about young romance set in the 1950s, when a young man is surprised to find out that the girl he’s noticed has been noticing him, too. Directed by Patrice Fitzgerald and written by Betsy Maguire. Cast includes Clare Fravel and Logan Lopez.

An Unbearable Play is about a Wyoming school beset by intelligent grizzly bears who are out for blood. The hilarious game for survival plays out in the school’s principal office. Directed by Kim Forde and written by Scott Stephen Kegler. Cast includes Julie Levine, Kent Morris, Emily Levine, and Richard Leslie.

Better Breathers Club

WEST HARTFORD — The Better Breathers Club, a free health education support group, will meet at the Hebrew Center for Health and Rehabilitation, 1 Abrahms Blvd. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at 2 p.m. Better Breathers Clubs support groups are associated with the American Lung Association.

The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 1, at 2 p.m. This month’s topic will be on exercise and maintaining strength to improve breathing. Pre-registration is requested but walk-ins are accepted. Leave a message with Mary Ann Couture at 860-966-0190.

Light Up The Night

WEST HARTFORD — The West Hartford Art League will hold Light Up the Night, a community celebration, on Friday, April 26, in honor of its 85th anniversary. This event is open to the public of all ages. Visit http://westhartfordart.org or call 860-231-8019 for more information.

Hundreds of luminaria will be lit on the hill at the Art League grounds at 37 Buena Vista Road. The public is invited to browse in the two galleries and help light the luminaria while enjoying food from Iron and Grain and CraftBird food trucks and live music from Bill Benson and The Hall High Jazz Quintet.

Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the lights outside on the grounds as the sun sets. The galleries will also be open for a preview of the 2019 Regional Juried Exhibit, CT+6, which doesn’t officially open until Sunday, April 28. Tickets are $10 a person and include food truck tickets for one person, a luminaria and entrance to the two galleries. Additional food truck tickets may be purchased. Tickets must be purchased in advance and will not be sold at the door. The event starts at 6 p.m.

Free Golf Clinic

WEST HARTFORD — The free instructional golf clinic for all golfers, sponsored by the Rockledge Men’s Club, has been rescheduled for Friday, April 26, from 4 to 6 p.m.

The clinic will take place at the Rockledge Golf Club practice range, 289 S. Main St. Rockledge golf professionals will provide instruction while golfers are practicing and free range balls will be provided. Applications to join the Men’s Club will be available at the clinic, on rockledgemensclub.com or at the Rockledge Golf Shop.

Beautify Bishops Corner: The Bishops Corner Neighborhood Association invites all to participate in a beautification program for Bishops Corner. They have partnered with the Knox Foundation who will once again provide and maintain planters in Bishops Corner. Each planter will cost $404.13, which includes tax. The Knox Foundation will deliver, pick up, water, maintain, and replace dead flowers from late May through November. Business sponsorships of $404.13 will include: Business listed in all publicity including press releases; business logo on flyers; new this year, a logo on planter signage; invitation to the ribbon cutting event for the planters; and an introduction and ability to address the attendees at the event.

The Friend of Bishops Corner sponsorship of $102 will include: Name listed in all publicity including press releases, flyers, website and signage on a shared planter. Kindness Rocks: 10:30 a.m. to noon. April 29. BYOR (Bring Your Own Rocks). Lisa Duncan, Outreach Specialist, will bring extra rocks and the paint. Social Security Savvy: 5 p.m. April 30. Learn the nuts and bolts of Social Security. Free Range Art

WEST HARTFORD — Works by New Britain artist Candace Nystrom will be on display at Noah Webster Library, 20 South Main St., from now through May 31. The show, “Art Brings Me Back,” is a collection of art she’s worked on for the last two years. The show includes what the artist calls “free range art,” which is expressed through different mediums.

Fisher House Fundraiser

WEST HARTFORD — For the month of April, each time a reusable community bag is purchased at the Big Y located at 772 North Main St., $1 will be donated to Hayes-Velhage Post 96 to benefit Fisher House, Visit https://www.fisherhouse.org for more information on Fisher House.

For nearly 30 years, the Fisher House program has provided a home away from home for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. These homes offer free, temporary lodging to military and veterans’ families, allowing them to be close to their loved one during a medical crisis. The Year of Happiness

WEST HARTFORD — The Year of Happiness is a year-long initiative for patrons of the West Hartford Public Library where staff incorporate happiness into all aspects of the library, including programs.

The program will run through the entire year. There will be three 5 ft. high trees at the circulation point in each of the three libraries. Each tree will have paper leaves in which patrons can fill in a reason that makes them happy, then stick the piece of paper on the tree with a clothespin.

Future programs include meditation, Mahjong, chocolate making, homebrewing beer, yoga and a children’s program titled Sparkly Treasures.

This program is courtesy of The Holocaust Education Resource and Outreach (HERO) Center, a joint initiative between Voices of Hope and the Maurice Greenberg Center at the University of Hartford.

“The History of the Israel-American Relationship” with Avinoam Patt: Sunday, May 5, at 9:30 a.m. Congregation Beth Israel. University of Hartford Professor Avinoam Patt examines the history of the relationship between the U.S. and Israel. A light breakfast will be served. Suggested donation is $10 per person.

Dementia Support Group

WEST HARTFORD — Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging is presenting a free dementia support group on the first Tuesday of every month from 10 to 11 a.m. at the West Hartford Senior Center, 15 Starkel Road.

Those who care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia will be able to learn useful skills while voicing their concerns. Topics include communication techniques, caregiver support, safety issues, benefits of activities and daily routine, family dynamics, stages of the disease process, behavior management and more.

The facilitators are Michelle Wyman, LSW, CDP, dementia specialist, Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging, and Elaine Reid, CDP, director of client services, Companions for Living.

Mobile Foodshare Schedule

WEST HARTFORD — The Mobile Foodshare will be distributing food in the back parking lot of the Community Kitchen at the Universalist Church, 433 Fern St., from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m.

Breakfast is served from 9:15 to 10 a.m. The dates are May 6 and 20. The Fern Street Food Pantry dates and hours are 10 to 11:30 a.m. May 18.
