Blood Cholesterol Reduction Programs

Voices Against Lyme Disease

AREA — Voices Against Lyme Disease CT would like to start a support group for individuals with Lyme Disease and other tick borne illnesses, including family members and friends. This is in its preliminary stage, so location and specific times will be decided once organizers understand how many people are interested.

At this point, the group will meet once a month, most likely on a Saturday morning in the town of Windsor. You do not have to be a Windsor resident to attend. NAMI Group Changing Location

BLOOMFIELD — NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Family Support Groups are confidential safe groups of families helping other families who live with mental health challenges.

The Windsor NAMI Family Support Group is changing its location to Bloomfield at the new Bloomfield Community Center on 330 Park Ave. The first meeting will be on Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This meeting will be held every fourth Tuesday of the month at the same time. Anti-Racism Workshop

WINDSOR — A two-day anti-racism workshop will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Sept. 19 and 20 at NCCJ, 820A Prospect Hill Road.

The workshop’s agenda will be focusing on: How racism impacts everyone, how to effectively talk about racism, skills to interrupt all forms of bias and discrimination and ways to take action in order to move towards equality in your workplace and community.

Anyone who is interested in gaining perspective on social justice issues and how to effectively talk about them, and who wants to increase their skills and make a difference, will find this workshop an impactful, enlightening experience.

Mum Sale

WINDSOR — The Windsor Woman’s Club is holding its annual mum sale on the Town Green on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Late-blooming mums in 9″ pots in your choice of five colors are three for $18 or one for $7. All are grown on a local farm.

Leroy Anderson, Calm Seas & Prosperous Journeys: Thursday, Sept. 5, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Leroy Anderson (1908-1975) was a master composer of popular orchestral miniatures. Still remembered today are works like “The Syncopated Clock” and “Sleigh Ride.” During the 1950s, his compositions were performed by American orchestras more often than any other native composer. Music Historian Jeffrey Engel will detail his life and play numerous examples of his still beloved music. Registration is appreciated.

Atlantic Magazine Discussion Group: Monday, Sept. 9, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Discuss current events as reported in the Atlantic Magazine. Essays and articles etc. in each issue will be discussed. The conversations will be facilitated by Dr. Roberta Tansman, former professor of American history at Wellesley College.

Mystery Book Discussion: “The Man in the Queue” on Monday, Sept. 9, from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. Published in 1929, this is the first in a series of six mysteries featuring Inspector Alan Grant. All readers are welcome to join one or all of the mystery book discussions at Prosser. Copies of the selected mystery title will be available at Prosser a month before the discussion date. The Great American Songbook & Singers: Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Listen to CD recordings of outstanding performances of standards, known as the Great American Songbook. There will be some surprises, and lesser-known artists who deserve better. Russ Salk is a lifelong lover of many genres of music. His primary interests have become classical music and the Great American Songbook, the great standards from about 1920 to 1950. Registration is appreciated.

Chill Out & Knit: Thursdays, Sept. 12 and 26, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. New members of all ages and experience are welcome to drop in and join this group of knitters in the Community Room. Knitters will guide one another with creative new projects or tinkering with an old one. No registration required.

Spoken Word and Art withJoy Lindsay Garvey: Thursday, Sept. 12, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Celebration of Caribbean/American Culture. Poetic and visual expressions, and their meanings will be explored in tonight’s arts and culture appreciation program with artist and poet Joy Lindsay Garvey. Joy’s art is on display on the upper level at Prosser during September. The program includes folk songs, poetry readings and art appreciation. Joy Lindsay Garvey is a Columbia University graduate, earned a Masters of Arts in Art and Art Education, and is a former professor of Caribbean Art and Culture at Capital Community College. Art Film & Conversation With Jack Brin: Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. From Caves to Gothic Art with Sister Wendy. This is the first of five sessions. Sister Wendy takes us into the caves of Lascaux, France, where the paintings may be as much as 20,000 years old. We leap to Egypt, c. 3000 BC, and then the tomb of Nebamun, c. 1400 BC. We see flatly painted figures in profile with eyes appearing as if frontal. Next comes ancient Greece, c. 500 BC and beautifully sculpted figures. Art historians consider the Gothic period to begin in the early 12th century, and continue into the 16th century, overlapping the Renaissance. This period is marked by castles, cathedrals, and linear perspective in painting. Join Jack Brin for today’s film and conversation about art in the community room. Jack Brin is an arts and music enthusiast and a former mathematics professor at Western New England College. Each program runs about 51 minutes. Registration is appreciated.

Prometheus Duo Sax Piano Concert: Sunday, Sept. 22, from 2 to 3 p.m. This afternoon’s exciting program will feature works from J.S. Bach, Robert Muczynski, George Gershwin, and more. Prometheus Duo is a saxophone/piano duo based between Hartford and New York City, specializing in classical music. Together, the duo has garnered critical acclaim from venues throughout the New England area, sharing a sensual blend of the current day and the proven works of the musical canon. Seeking Singers

BLOOMFIELD — The Connecticut Women’s Chorale is looking to expand its chorus with more female voices of all ages. Come check us out and bring a friend at two open rehearsals: Monday, Sept. 16 and/or 23, from 7:15 to 9 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 26 Wintonbury Ave.

Wine Bottle Bingo

WINDSOR — Windsor Education Foundation, now beginning 12 years of service to Windsor Public Schools, invites community members to Wine Bottle Bingo on Friday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. at Matthies Hall at the Oliver Ellsworth Homestead, 778 Palisado Ave.

Wine Bottle Bingo is a night of bingo played for prizes. All proceeds from the event will be used to award grants to teachers in the Windsor Public Schools system, to start creative learning programs. The event will include a presentation from one of the 2019 grant winners, a wine pull, a silent auction, and wine will be poured for attendees.

Country Fair Competition

WINDSOR — Windsor’s Northwest Park Country Fair is just around the corner. While you are putting away all those fruits and vegetables from your garden or the local supermarket, why not think about how you could win a prize at this year’s country fair?

Enter your favorite jams, jellies, canned fruit or vegetables in the Kitchen and Garden competitions. Or, as the fair approaches, maybe your just picked produce, flowers or your favorite baked goodies are prize worthy.

Tavern Trot

WINDSOR — In an effort to assist in the battle against childhood cancer, The Union Street Tavern of Windsor and Union Street Tavern Trot, Inc., a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, will host their 13th annual Tavern Trot on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 20 Union St.

Now in its 13th year, the Union Street Tavern Trot has grown to nearly 1,000 registered runners and has raised $350,000 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. The Union Street Tavern Trot is a 3.5-mile road and trail race through the historic Windsor Center, USATF-certified #CT0917JHP and Manchester Road Race qualifier. Cash prizes are awarded to the top finishers.

Police Cadets Seeking Role Players

WINDSOR — The Windsor Police Cadets are seeking paid role players to assist at law enforcement training classes from September through May, as needed, on evenings and weekends. Role players shall be compensated as follows: $25 for three to four hours and $50 for six hours.

To be considered, candidates must be a minimum 18 years of age. Advisors, members, and parents/guardians of members are ineligible. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Officer Patrick Dowd at 860-593-7808. A criminal history check and waiver are required.

Mobile Foodshare

WINDSOR — Starting in September, the Windsor Mobile Foodshare program will be changing the distribution day and time to alternating Wednesdays from 2 to 2:30 p.m. The first Wednesday distribution will be Sept. 11. The location will stay the same at The Lodge, 130 Deerfield Road.

The Mobile Foodshare truck comes to Windsor every other week to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to individuals and families in need. No registration is required. Bring your own bags, as they will not be provided. For more information, call Windsor Social Services at 860-285-1839.

One Source: 4 Visions

WINDSOR — Windsor Art Center, 40 Mechanic St., announces its new exhibition, One Source: 4 Visions, running through Sept. 28. The exhibit features the artwork of Francelise Dawkins, Andre Rochester, Stephen J. Tyson, and Takeyce Walter.

This exhibition is made possible by a grant from the Ensworth Charitable Foundation, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee; and additional support by Hartford Hospital, Dan J. & Alice Ford Ferraina and other individuals, businesses, & organizations in our community.

Dawkins is a Parisian who has been living in the United States for three decades. She coined the term, “silkollages”, when she began to apply meditative concepts to her work. Her textile collages are soulfully colorful.

Rochester is a Hartford-born visual artist. His work is a fusion of illustration and fine art with a strong emphasis on color and form. He creates both abstract and representational works regardless of his medium. He divides his time between the corporate and art world, without compromising the quality of his art. He is also an instructor and a curator.

Tyson is a New York City-born abstract visual artist and an associate art professor. He is also a lecturer, art consultant, panelist moderator and gallery assistant. His art is infused with colorful abstract geometric shapes and patterns influenced by music and his individual interpretation of folktales from the African Diaspora. He currently lives in upstate New York.

Walter is an award-winning artist and art instructor, who lives and works in upstate New York. Far from the climate and terrain of Jamaica, her country of origin, she has adopted her upstate New York surroundings as the subject of her picturesque landscapes that include flowing rivers and majestic skies.

Senior Center Programs

The center will begin offering Renew Active by United Healthcare. The Renew Active program, along with regular physical activity, may lower your risks for certain health conditions and help keep your brain sharp as you age. Renew Active is available to participants with select Medicare Advantage plans, beginning this September. You will also receive a one-on-one fitness orientation to help you set fitness-related goals.

The deep sea fishing trip will be held on Thursday, Sept. 26, aboard the Mijoy in Waterford. Cost is $70 and includes transportation, fishing, rod and real rental and cleaning of your fish.
