Yard Goats Winterfest

The Hartford Yard Goats will host their first Winter FanFest on Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dunkin’ Donuts Park in Hartford. This free event is open to the public and will include behind the scenes tours of the stadium, appearances by the team mascots and more. Fans will also have the opportunity to test out indoor climate control professional batting cages that the team uses. The Yard Goats will also be collecting nonperishable food items for Hands on Hartford’s food pantry. Fans who donate will receive 10 percent off merchandise in the team store. The festivities will be held outside on the main concourse level of Dunkin’ Donuts Park.

Michaels Cup honors

Berlin, Bloomfield, Canton, Cheshire, Coginchaug, East Catholic, Glastonbury, Haddam-Killingworth, Simsbury, Suffield and Westbrook were area high school athletic programs selected as Michaels Achievement Cup exemplary programs by the CIAC, it was announced on Wednesday. In all 19 schools were recognized. Also on the list were Amity, Bunnell, Derby, Gilbert, Lyman Memorial, Shelton, Shepaug and Wolcott Tech.

Wesleyan volleyball moving on

The Wesleyan women’s volleyball team will play an Elite Eight match in the Division III championships Thursday against No. 2 seed Juniata at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. It is the farthest the No. 7-seeded Cardinals (20-5) have ever advanced. The winner advances to the national semifinal on Friday to play for a berth in Saturday’s championship. In addition Wesleyan players Phia Bellizzi and Kaira Muraoka-Robertson were honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Bellizzi, a defender, was a third-team All-American and Muraoka-Robertson, a setter, was honorable mention. … Saturday’s 135th meeting between Yale and Harvard at Fenway Park will be on ESPN2 at noon.

Letter of intent signings

Granby High’s Parker Hansen, Christian Warren and Sydnie Dorman signed letters of intent Wednesday. Hansen will play baseball at Bryant, Warren lacrosse at Hartford and Dorman soccer at Central Connecticut. … Cheshire High swimmers signed letters of intent to compete in college. Sienna Breton (Ohio University), Ester Han (Colby), Shannon Lindsey (Vermont) and Ellie Murphy (Siena) of the recently crowned Class L state champions committed along with Joe Cannata (Fairfield)
