By the numbers: What new data from the U.S. Census says about Connecticut

The U.S. Census Bureau, through it’s American Community Survey, tracks changes in the population from year to year. Here are some highlights from the estimates contained in the latest report, which is based on surveys of the state population between 2013 and 2017.

How big is Connecticut?

The total population for the state is estimated at 3.6 million, with a median age of nearly 41. The average household size in Connecticut is 2.55 people. Families make up about 66 percent of the 1.4 million households in the state.

Where are people from?

About 86 percent of people living here are natives of the United States. Among foreign-born residents, 43 percent are from Latin America, 25 percent are from Asia and 25 percent are from Europe.

Who is married?

Among the population 15 and older, about 50 percent of males are married and 46 percent of females are married. About 37 percent of males and 31 percent of state females have never married.

Housing isn’t cheap

Households that pay 30 percent or more of their income on housing are considered “cost burdened.” About 52 percent of renters in Connecticut are cost-burdened. About 6 in 10 people in Connecticut live in a single-family home.

Poverty

About 10 percent of state residents live in poverty; about 13.5 percent of children under 18 living below the poverty level.

Education

In Connecticut, 90 percent of people who are at least 25 years old have graduated from high school and 38 percent have a bachelor’s degree or higher.

Where do most people work?

The highest percentage of state residents, 26 percent, work in educational services, health care or social services. About 8 percent of people work in finance and insurance, real estate or rental and leasing.

What do people make?

The median household income was $73,781. About 5 percent of households earn less than $10,000 annually, while 11 percent had incomes over $200,000. The largest percentage of households, about 17 percent, had an income of between $150,000 and $199,000.

A gender gap isn’t going away

Full-time male workers had annual median earnings of $63,908, while full-time female workers had median earnings of $51,549.
