Transportation will be front and center when the 2020 legislative session begins next month, and a new study from the personal finance website WalletHub reveals Connecticut has some room for improvement when it comes to driving around the state. The study, which ranked all 50 states on which are the best and worst to drive in, placed Connecticut at No. 40.

To compile the list, WalletHub drew from a trove of data available from the U.S. Census Bureau, Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Department of Energy and the Centers for Disease Control, among others, and looked at four criteria: Cost of ownership and maintenance, traffic and Infrastructure, safety and access to vehicles and maintenance.

While Connecticut ranked low for cost of ownership and maintenance (47th) as well as traffic and infrastructure (34th), it placed 2nd when it comes to safety and 24th in access to vehicles and maintenance.

Connecticut wasn’t the only New England state that fared poorly in the rankings – Rhode Island landed at No. 49. Hawaii was ranked as the worst place to drive in the U.S., while Iowa came in at the top spot. Tennessee, North Carolina, Texas and Nebraska rounded out the top 5.
