Connecticut residents spend more money on lottery tickets than residents of most other U.S. states do.
According to a recent study by LendEDU, Connecticut took eighth place in lottery spending per capita in 2017. Connecticut residents have spent more than $100 above the national average on lottery tickets for two years in a row.
While Connecticut residents spent an average of $321.41 per person on the lottery in 2017, neighboring states spent even more. In Massachusetts, residents spent an average of $737.01 on lottery tickets and in Rhode Island, the figure was $502.01. North Dakotans spent the least — only $34.68 per person on the lottery in 2017
Nearly all 50 states operate a lottery, and Connecticut has done so since 1972. In total, the state has pulled in $9.2 billion to its general fund during 47 years of selling lottery tickets. The state almost consistently makes more money off of the lottery than in the year prior, and the Department of Consumer Protection reports that in fiscal year 2017 the state added $349,410,030 to its general fund from the lottery. The state’s seen seen a $70 million increase in lottery revenue added to its general fund in the last 12 years.
