A Louisville Metro Police officer and another driver were injured in a crash Thursday night on Bardstown Road and Winston Avenue.

The officer and the driver of a black SUV were taken to the University of Louisville Hospital around 9 p.m. Both drivers are expected to recover, police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley said. Neither was identified.

The traffic unit is investigating the cause of the crash.

Smiley said preliminary information shows the officer, a member of Louisville Metro Police's Fifth Division, was driving east on Bardstown Road and collided with a black SUV that was traveling west. The driver of the SUV was the only person in the vehicle.

The officer and driver of the SUV were taken to University Hospital. The officer's condition was serious but he is expected to live according to a police spokesman.

Crews cut open the door of the officer's vehicle. He was conscious and alert, Smiley said, and received a police escort to the hospital. His injuries, she said, were serious but were not expected to be life-threatening.

"We do believe (the officer) is going to be OK," she said, adding that she didn't have further information about either drivers' injuries.

Smiley said the Fifth Division officer was on duty at the time of the crash.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has additional information is asked to call 502-574-LMPD.
