More than 2 million unemployment claims were filed across the nation last week, according to numbers released Thursday morning by the U.S. Department of Labor, including more than 50,000 in Kentucky.

Thursday's unemployment claims report said 53,738 claims were filed in the commonwealth in the week ending May 23. That's a slightly higher figure than the 47,036 people who submitted claims in the previous week, but down from the single-week high of 112,726 set in March.

Across the river in Indiana, 26,278 people filed unemployment claims in the week ending May 23, a dip of 3,158 from the week before.

The number of unemployment claims around the nation dropped a bit last week as more businesses reopen after being closed in some cases for two months. In a decrease of 323,000 from a week earlier, the Department of Labor release said, 2,123,000 seasonally adjusted initial claims were filed last week across the U.S.
