Louisville athletics received a significant financial gift this week when L&N Federal Credit Union donated $2 million to upcoming projects.

The money will be invested in the Cardinals' "Next Step Fund," which is earmarked for improvements with capital projects and other facets that impact athletes. Cardinal Arena will be renamed L&N Federal Credit Union Arena and will be the home of the U of L volleyball team.

“We are incredibly appreciative of L&N Federal Credit Union’s support, along with Chris Brown and his team’s personal support and involvement with fostering the mission of creating a terrific student-athlete experience at U of L,” said athletic director Vince Tyra. “Their mission and values closely align with ours and their ongoing financial support is a sure sign of their belief that we are on the right track.”

This is the fourth donation to the athletic program in recent months. In February, Louisville announced a $5 million gift from UPS for leadership training for student-athletes. Planet Fitness, owned by brothers Rick and David Kueber, gave $3 million toward renovating the basketball practice facility, now named the Planet Fitness-Kueber Center, last December. There was also a donation by Kentucky Farm Bureau last October.
