Louisville basketball mailbag: Starting point guard guess, NCAA violations and scheduling

Louisville Cardinals guard Darius Perry (2) goes up for a shot against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the first half in the ACC conference tournament at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday, March 13, 2019.

Now that the NBA Finals are over (we don't need to talk about who won), the rest of the summer will be filled with WNBA, the World Cup and feverish anticipation for the 2019-20 college basketball season.

Things are looking good for Louisville: Jordan Nwora and Steven Enoch will be back and nearly all of the newcomers have arrived on campus.

Preseason expectations for both the men's and women's teams are sky-high and there weren't that many dire hoops-related submissions, so you'll have to excuse me that a large portion of this mailbag is devoted to tacos.

@MichaelOLough20: What are Darius Perry's chances of winning the starting point guard spot?

At this point in the summer, still as good as nearly any other player's. I think Lamarr Kimble has a clear edge because he was brought in by Chris Mack specifically to plug that hole, but Perry, David Johnson or Josh Nickelberry are all starting with a clean slate. A lot could change as the Cards get deeper into summer workouts.

@adamnussb: Do you think IU and Louisville will start a new contract to play in basketball again?

On Louisville's side, Mack has said he'd like to keep playing Indiana, though it won't happen this upcoming season. No idea how Archie Miller and the Hoosiers feel about it.

@ConJalipari: Why are (the NCAA) so quick to serve and respond to us, but whenever you look around at several other universities that have committed infractions, all you hear is crickets?

Assuming this is in reference to the possibility of an NCAA Notice of Allegations after the CBS report that an NCAA executive said six unnamed schools will be notified of major violations this summer. While it seems likely Louisville could be one of those schools given its inclusion in the first federal trial, there is no indication Louisville was ever specifically discussed. The verbal notice of inquiry Louisville received in March was a formality so the NCAA could interview someone related to the school, but there's no telling how much progress the NCAA has made in its investigation since then. I wouldn't assume Louisville will get hit in the first wave of violations.

@kendoll61: What about the two Ga Tech transfers to ULWBB, eligible next season?

@kenticus: Any word on the new women players from GA Tech and their eligibility?

Jeff Walz and staff expect Elizabeth Balogun and Liz Dixon to be able to play right away, but Louisville has yet to receive an official eligibility ruling from the ACC. That's expected sometime in July.

@BrandonMettsKY: Thoughts on USWNT CelebrateGate? (I just thought of that name, I’m pretty proud of myself)

I'm so frustrated this is even a thing. It's a World Cup, let them celebrate all they want. My expanded thoughts are here, if you want to read them. Thailand has been on the other end of a 13-0 scoreline, by the way — in a friendly against Indonesia. It happens.

@Birdbrained2: Top 5 sports venues you’ve been to in person?

In no particular order: Fenway Park, All England Club (Wimbledon), Santiago Bernabéu, Emirates Stadium, TD Garden. Honorable mention goes to Oracle Arena for holding a special place in my heart.

@adamnussb: Do you believe in the Louisville football curse brought on by (former CJ football writer Jake Lourim)? His record was like 4-18 as beat writer.

I believe in the Louisville football curse brought on by losing Lamar Jackson and a coaching staff that ignored players and built a negative culture. We all miss Jake, but make sure you're following our new U of L football beat writer, Cameron Teague Robinson (@cj_teague on Twitter), for news on Scott Satterfield's first season.

And now for the taco lightning round.

@basham32: Favorite tacos? Favorite beach in Cali?

I enjoyed the best tacos I've ever had in my life last week, and I've eaten a lot of tacos. Taqueria Los Pericos in Santa Cruz, California, is a must-visit for the grilled fish tacos especially, but everything is outstanding. I went there twice in five days. It's also a short drive from two of my favorite beaches, Seabright Beach and Panther Beach.

@scottoneill: Hard or soft shell? The answer is obvious....

Give me two soft corn tortillas every time.

@JeffJtdehart:So in your opinion what goes into the making of a “good” taco? Where would one obtain a quality taco here locally?

I like to keep it simple: Flavorful, well-seasoned meat/protein that doesn't need a lot of toppings. Onions, cilantro and salsa are the staples. Also, a tortilla soft enough to fold, but thick enough that it won't become soggy and fall apart in your hand.

As for the best places in Louisville, I've got a handy guide for you complete with a map.

@Utterback13: What tacos will you eat to console yourself when the @warriors lose the championship to the @Raptors?

This is a low blow of a question, but it is my duty to answer so: Whatever I can get delivered to my apartment, where I will be sulking and avoiding footage of Klay Thompson on crutches.
