No concerns about a slow start for the Trinity High School football team in 2019.

Junior quarterback Nathan McElroy passed for 187 yards and three touchdowns to lead the host Shamrocks to a 41-14 victory over visiting Carmel (Indiana) on Friday in the season opener for both teams.

McElroy threw touchdown passes of 6 and 37 yards to tight end Kaelan Racculia and 19 yards to Ryan Miller. The Shamrocks also got two touchdown runs from Armon Tucker and one from Bradley West.

McElroy finished 17 of 24 with one interception. Tucker carried 15 times for 53 yards. Miller had eight catches for 94 yards, and Racculia had five receptions for 66 yards. 

Trinity dropped its season opener at Carmel last year, 24-21, on its way to an 0-5 start. The Shamrocks rebounded to reach the Class 6A state semifinals and finished 7-7.

Carmel returned 14 starters from last year’s team that was the state runner-up in Indiana’s Class 6A.

* Male 42, Floyd Central (Indiana) 13: Elijah Parish completed 14 of 21 passes for 226 yards and four touchdowns to lead the host Bulldogs over the Highlanders.

Izayah Cummings, a University of Kentucky commit, had eight catches for 177 yards and four touchdowns. The Bulldogs also got big games on the ground from running backs Quantrell Wright (10 carries, 93 yards, one touchdowns) and Jaylin Bross (13 carries, 92 yards).

Floyd Central’s Tristan Polk passed for 135 yards and a touchdown.

* Fern Creek 25, Jeffersonville (Indiana) 6: Donte Cambron carried 21 times for 80 yards and a touchdown and Anthony Teague tallied 58 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries to lead the Tigers over the host Red Devils.

Jeff’s Jordan Wagner returned a fumble 56 yards for a touchdown to pull the Red Devils within 13-6 with 4:48 remaining in the third quarter. But Cambron and Teague had short TD runs in the fourth quarter to seal Fern Creek’s win.

Fern Creek’s defense held the Red Devils to seven first downs and 85 total yards. B.J. Pepper led the defense with six tackles (three solo), two tackles for loss and one sack.

* Southern 36, Jeffersontown 0: L.T. Doneghy carried 11 times for 309 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Trojans over the host Chargers.

Eli Matthews led Southern’s defense with two sacks and two forced fumbles.

* Oldham County 27, Eastern 12: Juan Tapia carried 31 times for 165 yards and two touchdowns also returned a kickoff 95 yards for a score as the host Colonels beat the Eagles.

Tapia’s kickoff returned opened the second half and gave the Colonels a 14-6 lead.

Eastern quarterback Eli Scott completed 10 of 20 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown and also had a 51-yard touchdown run.

* Pleasure Ridge Park 50, Valley 29: Quarterback Maurice Sodja passed for 233 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for two scores to lead the Panthers over the host Vikings.

Sodja got PRP on the board first with a 69-yard TD pass to Derrik Gant, and his 39-yard TD pass to Gant gave the Panthers a 28-7 lead midway through the second quarter.

Valley’s Tyler Hatcher carried 16 times for 104 yards and a touchdown.

* North Bullitt 40, North Oldham 14: Cole Durbin carried six times for 138 yards and three touchdowns to lead the host Eagles over the Mustangs. Durbin had touchdown runs of 75, 31 and 25 yards.
