UPDATE: JCPS announced that schools are open and operating on a normal schedule Thursday.

Snow is coming to Louisville, which means that school attendance is in jeopardy this week.

The wintry mix will likely hit Louisville and much of central Kentucky between 9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

On Thursday, freezing rain is expected before 1 p.m. There is an 80 percent chance of precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch. There is a chance of snow before 7 p.m. Thursday as well.

Jefferson County Public Schools officials are keeping an eye on the roads and the weather, according to spokeswoman Renee Murphy, so the district can decide whether or not to have school.

“We’ve been watching this system for the past couple days," Murphy said. “We’ll be prepared to make the best decision for kids.”

Murphy said the latest that students would know if school was canceled would be around 4:30 a.m. the day of school.

But, if conditions are not suitable for school buses, and it is clear that the weather will get worse, then officials may cancel class earlier.

“We would call it earlier if it’s possible," Murphy said. "Some neighborhoods may be fine, but others may have not had treatment on the roads."

Oldham County schools have a similar process.

At 3 a.m., Oldham County officials check the radar, consult with local meteorologists, and drive the roads, according to superintendent Greg Schultz. The team of five drivers is out on the roads by 3:30 a.m. By 5 a.m. they will decide whether or not to close school.
