EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office has identified a teenager killed in a two-vehicle collision as 17-year-old Joshua S. Schaefer.

The accident happened at 6:42 p.m. on Indiana 57 west of Petersburg Road, according to Evansville/Vanderburgh County Central Dispatch.

Schaefer was taken from the scene to Deaconess Midtown Hospital where he died in the intensive care unit at 10:45 p.m., Coroner Steve Lockyear said.  An autopsy is scheduled for late this afternoon.

The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. did not identify what school Schaefer attended but did say he was enrolled in high school.

"Counselors from our crisis team are providing support to students and staff who are in need following this terrible tragedy," said Jason Woebkenberg, EVSC spokesman.

The occupants of the second vehicle also were taken to the hospital, according to an accident report from the Evansville Police Department is investigating the accident.

Police identified the driver of the second vehicle as Dan Dix, 39, of Evansville. Emergency response crews had to extricate Dix and two minors who were passengers in his vehicle.

Schaefer was westbound in a Ford Taurus and Dix eastbound in a Dodge Caravan when their vehicles collided, according to police.

Dix told police he was driving east on Indiana 57 when he saw Schaefer's car cross the center line and enter his lane, according to the accident report. The left front of both cars collided causing catastrophic damage to both vehicles.

The accident caused Indiana 57 to be closed between Petersburg and Oak Hill roads for several hours.
