Coventry's newest Chinese restaurant is starting to take shape with the frontage of the new city centre eaterie unveiled.

Work has been ongoing at the Smithford Way site for a number of months, but progress is clear to see with posters spotted in the shop front in recent days.

And according to the signage, the restaurant will be called "Alley Food and Mood".

Situated between Alaturka Doner and Nicely Noodle Bar, the restaurant will be home to "authentic Chinese cuisine", and "Hong Kong style desserts".

It is not yet known when the restaurant will open.

What can we expect?

Planning permission was granted in April to convert the former retail unit into a restaurant/cafe and hot food takeaway.

Previously, it was home to the Sense charity shop, which has been closed for some time.

A new Chinese restaurant in Coventry city centre is now starting to take shape

According to  planning documents , the applicant wanted to change the use of 31 Smithford Way from a retail shop to a "Chinese restaurant with takeaway service".

The eating area, which would be able to accommodate 54 customers will be located on the ground floor with the kitchen area and customer toilets upstairs.

Outside, there will be space for another 16 people.

The opening hours outlined in the application are from 11am - 10pm Sunday to Thursday, and 10.30am - 11.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Within the  Coventry City Council's  planning report, it says in regards to the proposal that: "The unit is located on the periphery of the primary retail area and has been vacant for a considerable period of time, vacancy rates along this section of Smithford Way are high and the overall shopping environment is relatively poor; it is therefore considered that the benefit of bringing this unit into use outweigh the harm that could result through the loss of this relatively small shop unit."

All change on Smithford Way

Elsewhere on Smithford Way, "The Den" - a grill and wine bar, is being developed, and may well open in the coming months .

From left to right, Smithford Way has seen a number of changes over the last 12 months.

A small strip row of retail units at the end of Market Way, opposite West Orchards, it was an area of the city which was a little under used until recently.

The Greggs shop was one of the first to make a change, doubling in size and opening a new sit down area as part of a major refurbishment.

Further down, a new Turkish kebab restaurant - Alaturka opened its doors last year , offering a range of meals and snacks, including Turkish ice cream.

At the far end, CV Mart, a small supermarket is another new addition - selling a number of Chinese products for the growing community in Coventry.
