A huge hole in the city's skyline that used to be part of Coventry Telegraph's former site will soon be transformed.

Part of the large site was derelict land and some of it was disused buildings.

The site covers land bounded by Bishop Street, Lamb Street and Chapel Street.

The buildings are being knocked down to pave the way for two new student accommodation towers.

The area includes the former Plumb Contracts and Bupa Medical Centre, and garages that used to belong to the Coventry Evening Telegraph, along with land where Maplin once stood.

The accommodation block is part of the larger project which will see the old Coventry Evening Telegraph building transformed into a hotel, along with a second student accommodation block.

In total there will be rooms for 1,202 students.

What's going on?

Last month barriers were placed around the eastern site of the Coventry Evening Telegraph site redevelopment - land bounded by Chapel Street, Lamb Street and Bishop Street.

According to the planning documents, the storage and industrial buildings which front onto the three streets will be demolished, and replaced with a purpose built student block of approximately 778 bedrooms.

These comprise of tower blocks which could be as high as 18-storeys on the Bishop Street side.

Over the summer, the planning application was approved.

In February, the land where Maplin once stood was initially cleared, albeit in tragic circumstances.

The body of a man was found by council workers after the padlocked gate at the site blew down.

His death was not treated as suspicious and his identity was never confirmed.

The land was later cleared, and in the months that followed, vegetation grew back until as recently as this week, when workers and diggers arrived on site.

The overall project

The redevelopment is taking place across three city centre sites.

Along with the East Site, the proposal for the North-West Site sees existing buildings - the printworks and industrial buildings - demolished, and a 424 bedroom student accommodation built instead.

This will be a U-shaped block of up to nine storeys, around a south facing courtyard.

The main part of the project takes place at the South West Site.

Here, the original Coventry Evening Telegraph building will be retained, and transformed into a 100 bed hotel, and an extension of 50 bedrooms above a conference centre.

The height of the building will be increased to five storeys, along with a rooftop bar.

Changing area

Once completed, the student accommodation buildings will be flanked by the Bishop Gate student complex - on the site of the old Post Office Building - on the one side, and the Student Village complex on the other.

What's more, work has started on another student accommodation site on the other side of the Ring Road, on St Columba's Close.
