Firefighters from two fire stations in Coventry were called to the scene of an accident on the A45 in which a driver had to be cut free from a car.

The Red Watch crew from Coventry central fire station attended the scene of the collision, on the stretch of dual carriageway near the junction with Broad Lane, assisting a crew from Canley fire station.

Just one vehicle, a BMW saloon, was involved and the vehicle struck a tree at around 5.40pm.

Firefighters cut the driver free by removing the roof.

It is understood the road was closed while emergency services worked at the scene.

The driver was not thought to be seriously injured but was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital.

Coventry fire station released pictures from the scene via Twitter and in a tweet urged drivers to take care in the wet weather.

It said: “Red Watch @_coventryfire assisted  @CanleyFireCrews to rescue a casualty trapped following a road traffic collision.

“Please drive safe, especially with the current weather conditions as they are.”

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called by West Midlands Police at 5.41pm to reports of a what was originally thought to be a three-vehicle road traffic collision, but which turned out to be a one-vehicle incident.

"One ambulance and a paramedic officer attended.

"On arrival crews discovered a car had collided with a tree.

"There was one patient - the driver of the car - a woman.

"She had to be cut free and was treated for her injuries, which were not believed to be serious, and taken University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire for treatment."
