The latest available figures are used to show where crimes have been committed and what type of offence it was.
Some even give a description of the crime as well as an update on what stage the police investigation is at.
So what's been going in Coventry?
The police.uk site has recently added statistics for October 2018, when 3,271 crimes were reported.
That was a rise of almost 800 from 2,478 compared to September's figures.
Among the more than 3,000 crimes recorded in October, 894 of those were either violent or sexual offences.

How does my area compare?
The police area of St Michael's saw the highest number of offences logged with 677 - up from 629 in September.
That area - which covers the city centre and Hillfields - saw a huge 187 incidents of anti-social behaviour during the 31 days of October.
The police.uk figures cover all categories of crime including robbery, drug offences and possession of weapons, and give figures for each.
The most likely place in Coventry to be burgled (60) or fall victim to vehicle crime (85) in that month was in the Sherbourne, Bablake, Whoberley and Earlsdon area.
Meanwhile, there were 31 recorded incidents of people being found in possession of an offensive weapon in that same area, while each of the eight other police areas saw numbers in single figures.
