Action must be taken to tackle speeding drivers “before a serious accident occurs”, residents on a Coventry street have said.

A petition of 31 signatures is requesting Gretna Road is bolstered with speed bumps to tackle the issue, or has its speed limit reduced to 20mph.

“Residents of Gretna Road are becoming increasingly concerned about the speed of some drivers using this road,” the petition states.

“Gretna Road is a long straight road which means that certain individuals choose to drive through it at great speed, during the day and night.

“Green Lane has speed bumps and a 20mph speed, but Gretna Road is still 30mph.

“Gretna Road has a large volume of families and it is a concern that someone, or someone’s family pet, will be hit by one of the drivers who choose to speed down this road.”

The petition, which will be presented to the council on Monday, February 25, warned measures must be taken “before a serious accident occurs”.

However a report by council officer Caron Archer, drafted ahead of the meeting, advises councillors not to take action.

Gretna Road is a cul-de-sac and is not used as a through road, Ms Archer states.

There have also been no injury collisions in the last three years, which means it does not satisfy the criteria for a safety scheme.

She added: “Safety schemes are prioritised in locations where there have been six or more recorded injury collisions in the previous three years.

“As the petitioners raised concerns about speeding, they were advised of the Community Speed Watch initiative and provided with the relevant contact details.”
