A former Coventry City star has hit back at Jeremy Clarkson after he took a swipe at him on Twitter.

Leicester City midfielder James Maddison was targeted by Clarkson after their 1-1 match against Chelsea last night.

Clarkson's comments on Maddison's glaring miss at Stamford Bridge prompted a cheeky dig at the TV presenter's thinning hair.

The former Top Gear host, who is well known for his Twitter jibes, said: "James Maddison. Too long at the barber’s. Not enough time practicing football."

It wasn't long before the footballer swiped back saying: "Stick to cars mate. Can count on 1 hand how many trims you’ve got left #thin."

His comeback has raked in over 150,000 likes on Twitter.

"JAMES MADDISON SHOOTS JAMES MADDISON SCORESSSSS," one fan said, while another commented: "Maaaaaaate you've done him dirtyyyy".

A lot of fans leapt to the player's defence, with one saying: "Best player on pitch in this second half."

Another said: "Boys a class act, one of those players you would actually pay to watch football."
