These are the stunning pictures of one local beauty spot which has helped one man find an escapism as he battles depression.

It was on Wednesday when Luke Roberts decided to take himself out of the flat he shares with his husband for time on his own at Arley Woods.

He walked nearly ten miles from his home in Chelmsley Wood to the woods on the outskirts of Nuneaton, to try and find some relief from his low mood.

He said it was the best thing he could have done that day, and was a stark difference from what he had been feeling.

He now wants to raise awareness of mental health.

Luke said: "The last few weeks I have found myself feeling much lower than usual, and I was feeling miserable.

"I would sit in my bathroom and smoke as many cigarettes as possible, and other thoughts and I got to a really low point where I just wouldn't go out.

"My husband would sit there with me.

"I work at a mental health centre and I see how all those people can get and thought I want to take time for myself.

"I have taken time off work, and since I've been to the doctors in the last few days, I have still been sat staring at the wall in my bathroom.

"I thought I couldn't carry on like this so I decided to take myself out alone for a couple of hours with my camera. "

Feeling peaceful and free

It took Luke a couple of hours to walk to the woods , but he said he just started walking to see where it took him.

After making it there, he told CoventryLive he hadn't felt so peaceful.

He hopes his story will help people with mental health issues to find their happy place.

Luke added: "After I started walking from my home, I came across Arley Woods.

"Arley Woods turned out to be the best possible thing I could have done with my day.

"I spent two hours walking all around taking different photos, listening to music and finding some sort of serenity that I haven’t had that for a while.

"I felt so peaceful and it was so relaxing there as soon as I walked into the woods. It was like I was in a bubble and everything that was wrong was outside and couldn't get to me.

"I felt really at peace and calm, and I haven't felt it for a long time.

"I felt happy.

"Finding a place that can help you find calm in what feels like a storm in your head meant the world to me today.

"Mental health is just as important as physical health. I hope somehow this will help motivate people suffering with mental health issues to find a place, hobby or anything so they can feel how Arley Woods made me feel."

Reach PLC has launched a new mental health health podcast called No Really, I'm Fine. Presented by three Reach journalists, the podcast was launched on Monday May 13 to mark the start of Mental Health Awareness Week. You can listen to it below.
