More than 50 neighbours joined together to sing happy birthday to a teenager turning 18.

Tom Randle stood on a stool in the middle of the empty road and was showered with confetti as neighbours in party hats pulled the surprise.

The sing-a-long took place after residents, observing social distancing during the coronavirus lockdown, took part in Clap For Our Carers on Ravensdale Road in Wyken.

Tom's mum Sharon Randle, an NHS worker, said: "They are a lovely bunch on our street.

“There are a lot of teenagers Tom's age who have grown up together and stayed friends as well as people who have moved in recently. One of the neighbours who took part is in her eighties.

"Altogether there were probably about fifty people who took part from safe distances on their driveways. I thought Tom would die from embarrassment but he embraced it. He stood on the stool so everyone could see him and it made his birthday really special.”

Tom has started working in an Iceland store since the start of the Covid-19 outbreak but has the ambition of becoming an actor or singer and is keen to resume his dream once colleges and universities reopen.

He was also watched by his brother, Ben, 19, and his dad Kev, as he received the birthday chorus last Thursday (May 7).

Sharon, 49, who works as a medical secretary at University Hospital Coventry, added: “The street also took part in the VE Day celebrations, there’s a sense of community and it’s lifting everyone at a difficult time.”
