A warning has been made to check the identification of cold callers after two reported bogus council officers approached residents at a house in Nuneaton.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council says that all genuine employees have identification and will always show it on request.

It follows claims that two people, who said they worked for the council, knocked on the door of a home in Stockingford.

In a post on Facebook, a resident reported that a man and a woman, who allegedly had lanyards on and were in a borough council van, asked if they could see if they had any spare land.

Concerned about the pair, the householder rang the police and the council.

Coventry Live contacted the borough council and, in a statement, Brent Davis, executive director for operations at the Town Hall, stressed: “All genuine council employees have identification and will always show this upon request.

"If in doubt, a call to the council’s Customer Services may help to confirm a caller’s identity.

"Advice regarding bogus callers can be found on the Warwickshire Police website.”

Anyone with any information they want to pass on to police should call 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, which is free to call from a landline and confidential, on 0800 555 111.
