A Coventry school is planning a temporary expansion to create two new classrooms.

Cardinal Newman Roman Catholic School and Community College, on Sandpits Lane, in Keresley, has submitted an application to the city council to build a new temporary building.

The expansion will create two new classrooms to coincide with the induction of an increased cohort of pupils in September 2020.

The secondary school is one of a number in Coventry that has been identified to cater for additional pupil places in line with a government drive to create extra space.

Works to the existing buildings are being undertaken to provide the extra capacity in the long term, however these improvements are scheduled to be completed by Easter 2021 and the temporary structure is needed to cater for the increased cohort of pupils from September 2020.

A planning statement from Seymour Harris Architecture, on behalf of the school, said: “The continued operation of Cardinal Newman Catholic School during these works is paramount, resulting in the requirement for alternative accommodation for staff and pupils for the duration of the refurbishment works.

“This takes the form of a temporary building.

“Seymour Harris can find no reason in the national planning policy or local plan as to why this application should not be approved.”

The application is for a single-storey temporary building on an existing area of concrete and grass near the school’s sports pitches.

The temporary structure would be on site for a maximum of three years to allow for procurement of a contractor and any delays to the start of the work.

A decision is expected by council planners by July.
