Gary Rowett has tipped Coventry City for a ‘big season’ as he heaped praise on Sky Blues boss Mark Robins.

Former Birmingham City, Derby County and Stoke City manager Rowett, who is currently out of work, was in Quest’s studio on Saturday night to analyse the EFL matches.

Among the games he discussed was City’s convincing 2-0 victory over Bristol Rovers, secured thanks to goals from Jordan Shipley and Gervane Kastaneer.

The Sky Blues are unbeaten so far, notching up three wins and a draw in all competitions, and Rowett think they are in for a promising campaign despite the off-field issues which mean they are playing ‘home’ matches at St Andrew’s.

“Big season for them,” said Rowett. “The Coventry fans have probably seen everything the last five or six seasons, so it’s probably no surprise.

“It’s a big move for them. Mark Robins has done a really good job and if he can them challenging this season, it will be a really big season.”

Robins’ side travel to Portsmouth tonight aiming to consolidate their early season play-off credentials.

Pompey have won one and lost two of their League One fixtures in the opening month having been beaten 2-1 at Sunderland last time out.
