After over half a century without any league success to celebrate, Coventry City are now on the brink of securing their second promotion in three years.

The Sky Blues are now looking towards June 8 when all 71 EFL clubs will vote on the future of the league season.

That vote, if it goes City's way, will confirm for the club that a curtailed League One season, now very much on the cards, will see them promoted to the Championship.

Two season's ago, Mark Robins ' side secured promotion to the third tier with a win at Wembley against Exeter City - but how much have City improved since that day?

That side boasted the likes of Marc McNulty, Michael Doyle, Jack Grimmer and Jordan Willis, but the Sky Blues have since added the likes of Fankaty Dabo, Sam McCallum and Liam Walsh to their ranks.

And then there are the players who have stayed since that day. How much have the likes of Liam Kelly and Max Biamou improved? Begging the question: which City team is better? You can read our player by player comparison below.

Lee Burge v Marko Marosi

Lee Burge was a good servant for the Sky Blues, making 160 appearance for the club over seven seasons, but Marko Marosi has proved himself to be a strong a trustworthy goalkeeper this season.

Burge's 2017-18 campaign was dampened by costly errors that saw him at one stage replaced by second choice Liam O'Brien.

Verdict: Marko Marosi.

Jack Grimmer v Fankaty Dabo

Fankaty Dabo has been excellent so far this season and has improved week by week since making his Sky Blues debut. He was somewhat of a loose cannon on the field at first but he has steadied his performances.

Jack Grimmer will be remembered fondly, however, and rarely dipped below the lofty standards he set during his debut season - and many still feel he was wrongly forced out of the side after promotion to League One.

Dabo edges this one, but Grimmer will be fondly remembered.

Verdict: Fankaty Dabo (just).

Dom Hyam 2018 v Dom Hyam 2020

For much of the 2017-18 campaign, Dom Hyam, a young centre-back signed from Reading's Under-23s, was force to watch from the sidelines - but after breaking into the starting eleven during the second half of the season, his composure at the back saw him retain his place right to Wembley.

The Hyam that stands in Coventry's defence this season is, however, a different beast and only looks set to get better and better.

Verdict: Dom Hyam 2020.

Jordan Willis v Kyle McFadzean

Jordan Willis should have been far too good for League Two during Coventry's promotion season. The academy graduate had been wanted by a number of Championship clubs the season before, including Rotherham United, but was often outshone by his defensive partner that season. His most memorable moment came at Wembley that season, scoring a stunner from 30 yards.

Kyle McFadzean has had his faults this season, but has worked tirelessly to adapt his game from a towering centre-back into a ball-playing one and is now a key cog in Robins' machine.

Verdict: Kyle McFadzean.

Tom Davies v Michael Rose

Tom Davies, like Dom Hyam, was a monster after finally cracking the first-team during the 2017-18 campaign and was perhaps best remembered for his contagious personality off the field - but missed out on his golden moment at Wembley after mindlessly stamping on a opponent in the play-off semi-final.

Michael Rose has been as impressive so far in his Coventry career, and at a higher level.

Verdict: Michael Rose.

Chris Stokes v Sam McCallum

Sam McCallum and Chris Stokes are two very different left-backs. Stoke often doubled-up as a central defender while McCallum could, quite comfortably, play left-wing.

Stoke was strong and forced highly-rated Ryan Haynes out of the side across the season, but McCallum has been excellent this season and one fo the star's of the season.

Verdict: Sam McCallum.

Michael Doyle v Liam Kelly 2020

It was almost a passing of the baton when Michael Doyle handed the captains armband to his more creative sidekick Liam Kelly.

Doyle was a hero that season for the Sky Blues and returned a hero after stints with Leeds United and Sheffield United amongst others.

Kelly has been an impressive captain this season - and Coventry would not be where they are without him - but how good was Doyler?

Verdict: Michael Doyle.

Liam Kelly 2018 v Liam Walsh

It seemed more just to compare Liam Kelly of two seasons ago to Liam Walsh than to his evolved armband-wearing self.

Walsh could well be the most talented player in League One this season and has directly contributed to so much this term already.

Verdict: Liam Walsh.

Tom Bayliss v Zain Westbrooke

It still hurts to see Tom Bayliss watching Preston play Championship football from the sidelines. The teenager, believe it or not, is yet to make a league appearance for North End despite being one of the real stars of Coventry's League Two promotion campaign.

Zain Westbrooke has slotted in as a direct replacement and has done nothing but impress as a key part of City's midfield diamond.

Verdict: Tom Bayliss.

Jordan Shipley 2018 v Jordan Shipley 2020

Remember that last-minute Luton screamer in League Two? Jordan Shipley wasn't all that well know at that stage. That was the then-20-year-old's first Coventry goal in just his ninth first team appearance - but since that moment he has been a regular fixture in the starting eleven.

This season Coventry Live readers voted him the club's best player of 2019. What a player he has become.

Verdict: Jordan Shipley 2020.

Max Biamou 2018 v Max Biamou 2020

2017-18 was Max Biamou's first season in professional football, at the age of 27, having signed from non-league Sutton United.

His bizarre quest to always score overhead kicks, and the fact that he seems to pull it off an impressive amount, is just one of the many reasons why Sky Blues fans love him - but has he improved since the days he partnered Marc McNulty in attack? It's a close one, maybe just about.

Verdict: Max Biamou 2020.

Marc McNulty v Matty Godden

Whoever leads the line for the Sky Blues over the next few season will always be trying to fill Marc McNuty's boots. The Scottish striker broke records for the club during his only season under Mark Robins.

Godden has impressed in flashes, without a doubt, but he has not quite matched the levels McNulty hit during the second half of the season in League Two - the man just could not stop scoring!

Verdict: Marc McNulty.

Duckens Nazon v Callum O'Hare

Wolves loanee Duckens Nazon had Premier League quality, when he wanted to show it. His stunning winner against Swindon Town would not have looked out of place at a World Cup finals.

But Callum O'Hare has been sensational on loan from Aston Villa and, should he bid City farewell for good in the summer, will be remembered as one of the club's best ever loan signings.

Verdict: Callum O'Hare.

Jonson Clarke-Harris v Amadou Bakayoko

Jonson Clarke-Harris is horrible to play against, the Sky Blues have learned that the hard way since his departure, but brilliant to have on your side.

He was the club's hard-man and Amadou Bakayoko, albeit cut from slightly different cloth, has struggled to match his levels of bullying.

Clarke-Harris is now wanted by Championship clubs, if reported in the media are to be believed, but Bristol Rovers are hanging onto him

Verdict: Jonson Clarke-Harris.
