A statement has appeared on Coventry City defender Jak Hickman's Twitter account which apologises for his "disgraceful" comments in a foul-mouthed video that went viral on social media this week.

The youngster sparked a furious reaction from the club’s fanbase after he posted the two-minute video via his Snapchat account as he partied abroad with friends - including one who appears to be Sky Blues teammate Tom Bayliss .

Among other profanities in the rant, in which Hickman boasts of his wealth, the young defender claims he’s leaving the club and adds: “f*** Cov.”

This morning, though, a statement was posted to Hickman's Twitter account condemning the actions and apologising to the Sky Blues fans who "shouldn’t have to see someone giving it the big one".

What did the statement say?

“Just want to speak on the video what people seen yesterday,” the statement posted to his Twitter account said.

“It’s disgraceful on my behalf saying them words and I’m so disappointed in myself, I’m not going to try and condone what I said because it’s just not on.

“I have nothing but love for Coventry City football club. I know a lot of people have had their opinion what they saw and I cannot blame them.

“I’m on holiday with friends and I had a drink but that is not an excuse for what I said.

“All I can say is sorry and try to prove myself to you on the pitch where it matters, if I get the chance.

“I and anyone else I mentioned are not leaving their club just to clear that up, it was drunken words which were not acceptable and I didn’t want anything I said to be seen.

“People who know me personally will know what I’m like and will laugh but if you don’t I cannot blame you for thinking I’m an idiot.

“But it’s happened now, all I can do personally now is try and put it right.

“Secondly, I just want to say as fans of the club you lot shouldn’t have to see someone giving it the big one like that, thinking I’m something special when I’m far from it.

“And I’m very different to that if you know me personally. I’m just upset with myself right now.”

CoventryLive contacted Coventry City for a comment, and they confirmed they are aware of the video and shall be dealing with the matter internally.

Hickman, who made his senior debut in the Checkatrade Trophy last season against Forest Green Rovers, has had loan spells with Ashton United, Mickleover Sports and Hereford United.

He penned a new two-year deal at the end of the 2017/18 season, with an option of a further year.

Has anything like this happened before?

It's not the first time a Sky Blues player has been in hot water thanks to social media.

In 2012, Gary Deegan was suspended by City for tweeting a pro-IRA slogan.

The player tweeted about the IRA in an online conversation with team-mate James McPake on the social networking website.

And in 2016, Coventry City defender Chris Stokes was given a one-match ban by the Football Association after he admitted breaching FA rules which related to the use of social media.

The 25-year-old Sky Blues man was charged by the FA for a comment he made between the Premier League encounter between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in May 2016 which 'was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper'.

It was further alleged that it was an “Aggravated Breach” as it included a reference to sexual orientation.
