Marcus Harness is relishing the chance to show Coventry City what they missed out on when he lines up against them in a Portsmouth shirt on Tuesday evening.

Winger Harness, 23, was rejected by the Sky Blues as a kid, though he doesn’t hold any grudges against the club who represent the city of his childhood years.

Harness completed a move to Pompey this summer from Burton Albion, believed to be worth around £1m, and he netted in their defeat at Sunderland on Saturday.

City, of course, are in excellent form themselves having remained unbeaten at the beginning of this season - indeed they’re yet to even concede a league goal.

Binley born Harness, though, will have a little extra motivation to perform when he comes up against them at Fratton Park.

“When I was aged 13-14, I played for Coventry in goal on a Sunday and up front for Nuneaton on a Saturday,” Harness told the Portsmouth News.

“The Coventry thing was a trial, I was there for a year as a goalkeeper, but didn’t sign.

“At the same time, I was playing outfield for Nuneaton, it was a little Saturday team, it wasn’t a very good set-up. In the end, I decided not to play in goal any more, I sacked it off.

“I was alright as a keeper but a bit small, and didn’t enjoy it as much as I do outfield. Mind you, I had earlier been on Coventry’s books as a right-back, but they released me!”

“I’m not a Cov fan, but have a special place inside for the club. I know a lot of people who have played for Coventry and still play for Coventry.

“I’ve beaten them a few times before in my career – and would love to do it again.”
