Having added striker Jonson Clarke-Harris and midfielder Abu Ogogo from Coventry City in the January transfer window, Bristol Rovers have already picked up defender Tom Davies following his Sky Blues exit this summer.

What’s more, the Gas have been credited with an interest in right-back Jack Grimmer.

That’d make it FOUR former City players assembled at the Memorial Stadium in the space of two transfer windows.

So, then, what is it with the Sky Blue obsession in the West Country?

Well, Rovers’ head of recruitment Tommy Widdrington - formerly of the Ricoh Arena - has explained that, quite simply, Coventry have possessed better players - and once available, Rovers haven’t hesitated to snap them up.

Despite only returning to League One last term, Mark Robins’ men finished eighth, comfortably above the Gas.

“I was asked the other night at the AGM about why all the players we are signing are coming from Coventry,” Widdrington told the club’s official website.

“With all due respect, Coventry finished eighth in the league [Rovers finished 15th] so you would have to say they probably had players that were better than ours.

“I would never suggest or agree to sign a player for any club that I work for that I didn’t feel was an upgrade on a player we have or had.

“We have got to remember we have had eight or nine players leave the club because of their contracts and positions have to be filled.

"And if the position requires a player [from Coventry] who I feel is good enough I will suggest him to the manager, the people upstairs, and if all three parties agree we will see if we can make it happen.

“I would say the two we signed from Coventry in January I believe certainly improved us in our aim to stay in the division. If we had not signed those two guys it might have been a different story. But then it may not, that is all after the event.

“I am the one that has to put my neck on the line and say I would sign him if I was in your position. I am glad it has worked out well.”
