No. 2 Oklahoma State wrestling visits No. 5 Missouri in top-5 showdown

The Cowboys look to snap the Tigers’ 35-dual unbeaten streak.

Oklahoma State’s Daton Fix, right, looks for a collar tie against Iowa State’s Austin Gomez during their 133-pound match Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019, at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater.

The No. 2 Oklahoma State wrestling team renews its rivalry with No. 5 Missouri on Saturday in Columbia, Missouri. The Tigers are on a tear with a 35-dual winning streak, including a 21-19 comeback win over the Cowboys last year in Stillwater.

Jaydin Eierman’s pin against two-time reigning NCAA champion Dean Heil pushed the Tigers to their first win over the Cowboys since 2015. OSU boasts a 41-7-1 overall series record against Missouri.

Top-10 matchups

The dual will feature three top-10 bouts.

133: No. 2 Daton Fix (OSU) vs. No. 10 John Erneste (MIZ)

149: No. 4 Kaden Gfeller (OSU) vs. No. 9 Brock Mauller (MIZ)

174: No. 7 Joe Smith (OSU) vs. No. 2 Daniel Lewis (MIZ)

Of the three, the 174-pound matchup is the most intriguing. Smith is 1-3 against ranked opponents this season and will be weighing in a few pounds underweight as he begins to cut down to 165 for the postseason. Lewis enters the dual after the biggest win of his career when he pinned reigning NCAA champion Zahid Valencia of Arizona State.

Weigel take 2

Preston Weigel is expected to wrestle again at 197. The redshirt senior didn’t create any offense in his 2-0 decision with riding time against Air Force last week after missing two months with an injury. Dakota Geer, who is ranked No. 13 at the weight, should be out of action while No. 9 Jacobe Smith starts at 184.

Can Sheets do it again?

Wyatt Sheets looks to have locked down the starting spot at 157, and a win over another ranked opponent in No. 14 Jarrett Jacques should help his odds to qualify for NCAAs. Sheets has won five of six matches, including two wins over ranked foes, since making his dual debut Jan. 18 at West Virginia.
