The Theatre Royal Shakespeare Players are Cumbrian Shakespeare enthusiasts who believe that Shakespeare belongs to everyone, not just to watch but to perform. In 2013 they were selected for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Open Stages project, which provides professional mentoring for amateur actors and directors.
Over the last few years, they have put on extremely well-received productions of Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing, Macbeth and The Tempest. For their fifth annual production, they are delighted to present A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare’s best-loved comedy, from 16th to 20th July.
The play opens in the ancient city of Athens, where the ruler, Duke Theseus, is about to hold a lavish, four-day wedding celebration. But this is a play in which the path of true love runs anything but smooth…
Outside the city walls, an enchanted forest is criss-crossed by a warring Fairy King and Queen, two pairs of argumentative lovers and a group of amateur actors who are trying to rehearse a play. The Fairy King’s mischievous servant Puck plays tricks on everyone and three worlds collide – with spectacular results!
Directed by Tony Parker, the production will feature specially made costumes, film projections, magic, mayhem and plenty of laughs.
