A KNIFE-WIELDING man has been  tasered and arrested after an incident which left three people injured at Southampton Common.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, near the Cowherds pub, at about 4.20pm yesterday, and arrested the man.

The Common was sealed off for a number of hours and a large number of police vehicles, including a forensics van, were seen in the area.

The 34-year-old man who was arrested remains in police custody.

A witness, who did not want to be named, told the Daily Echo: "We were walking across the main green and we heard a lot of shouting and screaming.

"It sounded like military training.

"We heard 'run away'.

"[The man] let [a woman] go and ran about 20 yards and then there was a loud bang, like a taser sound.

"It looked like he had something shiny in his hand.

"We got scared and I wasn't sure what was going on."

Residents took to social media to report the incident.

One user wrote: "I drove past at about 4.45pm and I have never seen so many police officers and ambulances in one location.

"It looked like a major incident had occurred."

Another wrote: "What...is happening at the Cowherds on the Avenue?

"Twelve police cars, riot van, ambulance and police walking and looking in the bushes."

Entrances into the Common near the pub and Cemetery Road were closed off.

Hampshire Constabulary released a statement which said: "A man, who was in possession of a knife, threatened members of the public.

"Three people are being treated for injuries.

"Officers deployed Taser at the scene to detain a man.

"A 34-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested and remains in police custody.

"A police presence remains on Southampton Common as part of the ongoing investigation."
