Teen guilty in $6K Aurora coin theft, seeks admission to drug court

An 18-year-old Aurora man charged with stealing $6,000 in coins from an Aurora vending machine business in December 2018 has pleaded guilty to that and four other felonies.

Keynaz J. Foster, of the 1700 block of Felton Road, was free on bond in a car burglary case when he and a 16-year-old were charged early this year with the theft from the business on the 1700 block of Mallette Road, Kane County court records show.

Foster posted bond and was arrested again on charges that he possessed a stolen vehicle after an Aurora traffic stop in mid-February. He has been held at the jail since then on $680,000 bail, meaning he would have needed to post $68,000 to be released while the cases were pending.

On Monday, court records show, Foster's bail was revoked after he entered a "cold" or "blind" plea in which a defendant admits guilt without having agreed upon a sentence with prosecutors and instead leaves it up to a judge.

Foster pleaded guilty in a total of five cases: the coin theft; the November 2018 vehicle burglary; the February 2019 stolen vehicle charge; and burglary and theft charges from Feb. 18 and 19 respectively, court records show.

The last two cases stem from a vehicle burglary and the use of credit cards stolen from it, records show.

The most severe charge is the coin theft, which has a top prison term of seven years but also is eligible for probation.

Kane County Judge John Barsanti will sentence Foster on Oct. 11, according to court records. Foster also has applied for the county's Drug Rehabilitation Court.

Commonly known as drug court, it is an intensive program of counseling, random tests and other measures for drug addicts facing significant prison terms. As part of the process, a defendant pleads guilty and the prosecutors dismiss the charges if the program is completed.

Kim Bilbrey, assistant Kane County Public Defender who is representing Foster, declined to comment.
