The Heart of Wales is renowned for being one of the most beautiful railway journeys in the UK.

Celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, it is regarded as a lifeline for people living along the route – for many communities it is the only form of public transport available – as well as an increasingly popular tourist attraction in its own right.

Llandovery is one of the earliest stations built on the line in 1858, 10 years before the 'Central Wales Line' from Shrewsbury to Swansea was completed.

At the heart of the Carmarthenshire market town, Llandovery station links the community to Llanelli and Swansea as well as Shrewsbury going north.

It is second only to Llandrindod Wells in terms of size and Llandovery marks the start of one of the most spectacular spots on the line crossing Cynghodry Viaduct before going into Powys and under the Sugar Loaf Mountain tunnel.

Passenger services are delivered by Arriva Trains Wales, who run four services north and five south every day from the station.

The refurbished station buildings were converted into a café and art gallery which is run by a dedicated group of local volunteers. They were officially opened by

The Prince of Wales in 2011. The station gardens are looked after by local schoolchildren and Friends of Llandovery Station.

Today, the railway is thriving, helped by the Welsh Government's policy of free travel on the line for senior citizens during winter.
