'Unfortunately there is no champagne, no vodka... but it works': Anthony Joshua takes fans inside the 'humble' two-bed Sheffield flat where he lives while training for Jarrell Miller clash

  • Anthony Joshua makes his US debut against Jarrell 'Big Baby' Miller on June 1
  • Ahead of fight night, AJ is locked in camp with coach Rob McCracken in Sheffield
  • The heavyweight champion spends the weeks living in a two-bedroom flat
  • 'It works, it's peaceful... and it accommodates what we need for training,' he said

Anthony Joshua may be the big-money star of British boxing - but the world heavyweight champion is still a man of simple pleasures during training camp.

While the likes of Floyd Mayweather love to flaunt their fleet of flashy cars and mansions, Joshua prefers a more 'humble' life in the weeks before fight night.

The IBF, WBO and WBA heavyweight king is currently preparing for his US debut in New York against Jarrell 'Big Baby' Miller on June 1.

As he has since before taking gold at London 2012, AJ is putting in the grind in Sheffield, where he trains at the GB boxing base alongside the stars of tomorrow.

It's here, too, that he lives in the weeks before the first bell. Though Joshua is believed to have earned close to £100million during his unbeaten career, he still lives in a cosy, two-bedroom flat in camp.

This week, he gave fans an insight into his life during training as he did his own version of MTV's hit show Cribs and gave viewers a tour of his 'humble abode'.

'This is where it goes down,' Joshua says in the video as he welcomes the cameras into his home.

'They're comfortable, they work... there is no need to change it,' he says of the 'vintage' chairs

He begins by taking fans into the living room, which features a worn black sofa and armchair, both of which are now covered in patches of brown.

'You've probably noticed the vintage seats, we've had these seats in here for about the last seven years,' he says.

'But you know the old saying: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". They're comfortable, they work, I can relax... it's what I need so there is no need to change it.'

There is some room for state-of-the-art technology, however. Joshua shows off a special chair where he uses his 'NormaTec' compression kit, a 'pulse recovery system' which helps athletes recharge in between workouts.

AJ's lounge is attached to a similarly simple kitchen, which features electric cookers and a fridge full of the fuel needed to keep the champion in shape.

Packed inside are a lot of vegetables, cartons of coconut water and bottles of Supermalt - which was developed in the 1960s and originally used by the Nigerian Army as a dietary supplement to help troops re-energise.

'Nothing too exciting but it works,' he says. 'Unfortunately there is no champagne, no vodka, no Ciroc, just water, Supermalt and cold-pressed juice.'

Joshua then moves into his en-suite 'master bedroom', which features little other than 'what I call a big single bed'.

But he insists: 'It works. I can kick back after a long day, just think about my training, sparring, what I'm trying to achieve in and outside the ring... it's very quiet, not much goes on in here.'

Next to his bed he keeps a cross, which he reveals his mother gave him as 'protection'.

Inside the bathroom, meanwhile, is a window which allows AJ to 'keep an eye on anything that's going down.'

He jokes: 'Sometimes you have to keep an eye on the streets and check nothing dodgy is happening. Make sure everything is in order.

'Sometimes I just come here and stand for hours making sure everything is smooth, nothing is going on and we're all protected.'

One of AJ's closest friends and a key member of his team, David Ghansa, lives with him in Sheffield, helping him manage his life while he focuses on getting in shape.

He stays in the second bedroom which features two double beds and, in Joshua's words, 'the lovely view' over the Steel City.

'While you're in here you can't hear anything, it's peaceful,' he adds.

The final stop on the tour is the second toilet, 'that everyone and their dog uses'.

AJ jokes: 'Excuse the smell but that's the communal bathroom!'

He adds: 'When people have come here and when people have seen this place, they do wonder why we haven't moved.

'(It's) because it works. It's peaceful, everyone has their own space, better sleeping, food to eat and it accommodates what we need for training.

'And do you know what's brilliant about it? The gym is honestly a two-minute roll down the hill... there's no excuses not to train so it's a perfect location.'
